However, Canelo, who was already a middleweight, had only ten weeks to go before brutally eliminating the Russian in the same round.

Kovalev revealed that he didn't even take a week off before returning to camp to face the Mexican superstar and vowed revenge.

SunSport reported that he said: "After the victory at Chelyabinsk I was not allowed even to rest for three or four more weeks.

"On September 1, 2011, I went back to California training camp and began preparing for my fight with Canelo.

"Canelo, smart and strong, but I need to rest for four weeks after the fight and two more months to prepare.

"I can assure you that the outcome of the fight would be different. I am certain I can win the rematch.

Kovalev, 38 years old, wanted to fight for his hometown. Chelyabinsk and chose mandatory challenger Yarde, 30, as the opponent to do so with.

Canelo, 31 years old, wanted to challenge for the WBO title, but they didn't agree on terms.

He was willing to pay Yarde a step-aside to help him replace Kovalev.

However, no deal was reached and Kovalev was rushed back after beating Yarde. He was then awarded a reported PS8.7m for Canelo.

Kovalev stated that a month prior to my flight in Chelyabinsk I was offered by Katie Duva to fight Canelo on September 7.

"I declined, because I was going to have to interrupt my training camp during my preparation for the second consecutive time."

"The offer was very intriguing, but I couldn't change the expectations of my close friends and family. I told Katie that I would fight Canelo following my victory over The Yarde.

Canelo opted to give up his light-heavyweight title and settled for a lower division, where he is the unified super-middleweight champion.

This weekend, he faces Caleb Plant (29), in a title decider in Las Vegas.

Kovalev was to have returned against Bektemir Melikuziev (25), in January, but was pulled after testing positive for banned substance synthetic estrogen.

He attributed the failure of the test to a tainted addition and protested his innocence, but he was unable to return the ring.
