After taking the smiling photos, he has received a lot of backlash.

These photos were deleted because they show him smiling at the camera as he visited the death camp, where thousands were killed.

His post about "tone deafness" sparked outrage from the public. One person asked him if it was Disneyland and if he knew.

Two-time World Champion, the two-time winner, posted the selfies with the comment "lovely Day Trip Today Round Auschwitz, Open Your Eyes a Lot".

He was seen in one of the photos standing beside his girlfriend at Auschwitz's entrance. He has since defended the photos and his critics, calling them "keyboard warriors".

One Twitter user responded: "I don’t think the word lovely is quite appropriate to describe Auschwitz.

"It is best to not pose like that in places where people have experienced suffering, torture, death, or hell." It may have opened your eyes, but it was a start.

Another commented, "I think it's great that they went to Auschwitz. I'm sure they learned lots but the optics are poor."

You don't have to take pictures at extermination camps - and you definitely shouldn't be. This is a mass grave.

Another added: "Whoever it may be, I hope he gets sparked out clean out. There isn't much brain there to harm in fairness anyway.

"You might assume that he would acknowledge his error after the backlash to his insensitive tweet, but instead he laughs about it. D***head."

McDonnell decided to fight back and sparred with anyone who disagreed with the post.

He stated: "Obviously, a nice day out in Poland with the misses she, and the place open your eyes, chill you bean."

"Ok, mate, it's a tourist spot isn't it? If we visit we can smile, come on pal.

"That's why it's me there, obviously, I have weekend away with my girlfriend. I'm not going not to smile, but I understand what's happening, chill out a bit."

He said that anyone criticizing him should "get a live" and that "getting boring" was the opposite.

Auschwitz-Birkenau, the largest Nazi concentration camp, is where 1.1 million prisoners, mostly Jews, were killed.

It was built to house political prisoners from Poland, who arrived in May 1940.
Adolf Hitler was then in charge of the extermination, with the first prisoners executed in September 1941.

From the beginning of 1942 to late 1944, transport trains transported Jews from all over Germany to the camp's gas rooms. There they were vaporized with Zyklon B.

It was liberated finally in January 1945. One in six Jews who were exterminated during World War II died there.
