The Brit stated: "He changed his return position, that's why he did it.

He was having trouble with the first-serve return so he stepped back two meters. I immediately threw in the underarm serve when I saw him move further back.

"I have no problem with players using it. I have never done so.

It's a legal way to serve. If someone was standing at the baseline, I wouldn't use an underarm serve. It is a stupid idea.

It's a clever play tactically.

"No one is saying it's rude for someone to go back from 5-6 meters behind the baseline in order to gain an advantage.

"So I used it to not be disrespectful to his but to say, If you're going further back to return serve to give yourself more, then I'm going for that."

What are the rules for underarm serves?

It is perfectly legal to serve underarms.

It is the same as hitting the ball with the racquet, as long as it does not hit the ground.

In fact, the underarm serve was first used AGAINST Murray's coach Ivan Lendl in the 1989 French Open by Michael Chang.

Daniil Medvedev and Nick Kyrgios are both proponents for the underarm serve.
