This was his first fight under Eddy Reynoso (who also trains Canelo alvarez), and a second bout against Charles Martin was scheduled for October.

It is now at risk of being delayed because Ruiz, 31 years old, decided to undergo surgery to treat a long-standing injury.

Andy Ruiz Sr., his father, said to ESPN that he had undergone surgery on his right knee. He had been suffering from the problem for three years.

He couldn't run well, and could not perform certain movements. Gel was used to manage the pain but it wasn't enough. He decided to have an arthroscopy.

Pedro Lomeli Jaime, the same doctor who treated Canelo's operation on Canelo.

Ruiz won the unified titles in June 2019, but lost them six month later to AJ. He was currently in talks with Martin, 35, an ex-champion.

The Mexican-Americans still have a chance of fighting for their right to return before the year ends.

Ruiz Sr. said that they gave them hope that he would return in December.

"The doctor and the physical trainer told us that everything is going well right now. But we'll see what happens when it comes.

"For the moment, we are happy that everything went smoothly."
