AJ's hopes dashed

Anthony Joshua's dream of becoming a three-time world champion has been dealt a blow as his promoter, Eddie Hearn, revealed that talks with Deontay Wilder have stalled. As a result, Hearn has turned his attention to Filip Hrgovic, the IBF mandatory challenger, in an effort to secure a clear path to the title for Joshua.

Usyk-Fury bout takes precedence

However, Hrgovic's chances may be affected by a ruling that Oleksandr Usyk, the current title holder, will be facing Tyson Fury in a first-ever four-belt undisputed bout. This will supersede Hrgovic's mandatory position. Hrgovic may have to settle for an "interim" title shot that guarantees him a future crack at the full version, or inherit the strap if Fury or Usyk vacate it.

Wallin complicates matters

In a further complication, Swedish boxer Otto Wallin has emerged as a potential contender. Wallin's recent win against Murat Gassiev has propelled him to second place in the IBF rankings. This means that if Hrgovic is called into an eliminator or interim title bout, it is likely to be against Wallin rather than Joshua.

Hrgovic as an alternative

Should negotiations with Wilder fail to be revived, Hearn has indicated that Hrgovic would be a viable alternative for Joshua. While the Wilder fight would be bigger, the opportunity to compete for a world title would take priority. Hearn expressed disappointment that the proposed Usyk-Fury rematch appears to be in progress, but acknowledged that the situation is still uncertain.
