Intensive Care Battle

Irish boxer John Cooney is currently fighting for his life in intensive care after doctors discovered a brain injury following his latest fight. The 28-year-old suffered defeat in the first defence of his Celtic super-featherweight boxing title.

Discovery of Brain Injury

Cooney was beaten by Welshman Nathan Howells at Belfast’s Ulster Hall, with a stoppage in the ninth round. Medics quickly attended to him at the fight and he was taken to the Royal Victoria Hospital for further tests, where a bleed on his brain was discovered.

Uncertain Condition

Cooney underwent immediate surgery to relieve the pressure on his brain and is currently in intensive care. His family and management team have asked for support and prayers as he faces this tough battle.

Road to Recovery

Cooney had been the Celtic super-featherweight champion since November 2023 and had recently returned to the ring after a year-long break due to a hand injury. His last fight was a victory against Tanzania’s Tampela Maharusi in London.
