Mario Aguilar, a Mexican boxer, accidentally hit a big hook on the referee
Brandon Glanton, Aguilar's rival, moved out of the way for the shot which landed flush in the face of the ref.
The 31-year old entered the contest as a huge underdog and was determined to cause an upset.
He landed with the perfect shot he had been dreaming of... only it connected with his referee.
Amazing scenes later, the official just shrugged off his initial stumble in a video posted by @GloversStories.
After putting Glanton in a headlock, he resumed his duties and separated Aguilar from Glanton.
After knocking out his opponent in round two with a left hook, Glanton won his 17th consecutive win.
It was the referee’s iron jaw that made the difference, as @GloversStories stated: "THE RELEASE HAS GOT a CHIN."
Loui DiBella, a boxing promoter, tweeted that the "This actually happened tonight." The ref gets the best punch of the round.
Another commentator said: "He took it well."
The boxing fan then joked that Khan would have done the chicken dance after Khan landed.
One joked that the video didn't show the ref returning with a steel chair.
Incorrectly punching referees is not uncommon in the squared circle. A female official showed her toughness after she was hit during a Commonwealth Games heavyweight contest.
After being struck by Irvin Turrubiartes, Mexican ref Jesus Granados was forced to leave the ring in April on a stretcher.
