Boxing Champion Jai Opetaia Reveals His Connection to Premier League Legend Tim Cahill

A Family Affair

For Jai Opetaia, boxing runs in the family. As a fourth generation fighter on his dad's side and third on his mum's, the undefeated cruiserweight champion has fighting in his blood. But there's also a surprising connection to Premier League royalty in the form of his cousin, Everton legend Tim Cahill. Despite not being super close, Opetaia shares a bond with Cahill and even jokes about inspiring his famous corner flag celebration.

Growing Up in the Gym

Opetaia's upbringing in Sydney was centered around the gym. Raised by his grandad Billy, a former professional boxer, Opetaia had his first boxing bout at just eight years old. Boxing was always his calling, and he dedicated himself to the sport, putting it first above all else. Representing Australia as an amateur, Opetaia won medals at junior and youth levels and made it to the 2012 Olympics in London.

Rise to Professional Success

In 2015, Opetaia turned professional, but it wasn't until seven years later that he had his big break. He dethroned Mairis Briedis to claim the IBF and Ring Magazine belts and successfully defended them against Jordan Thompson in London. Now, Opetaia's career is set to skyrocket as he features on the massive Christmas card in Saudi Arabia, defending his titles against Ellis Zorro on the same night as Anthony Joshua and Deontay Wilder.

Ambitions for the Future

With his eye on the future, Opetaia has his sights set on potentially moving up to the heavyweight division. Sharing the bill in Saudi Arabia with heavyweight contenders Daniel Dubois, Jarrell Miller, and Filip Hrgovic, Opetaia sees the Middle Eastern outing as a scouting opportunity. He even expresses his admiration for light-heavyweight champ Dmitry Bivol and the possibility of sharing the ring with him in the future.

As Opetaia continues to make waves in the boxing world, his connection to Premier League legend Tim Cahill adds an intriguing layer to his story. With his talent and determination, there's no doubt that Opetaia is on the path to even greater success.
