Ilunga Makabu is WBC champion

The pair met for the first-ever time at the WBC convention Mexico. It was obvious that there was a significant size gap.

Canelo said he would prefer to be 180lb or 12st 8lb. This is nearly TWO STONE less than the 200lb, 14st4lb cruiser weight limit.

Makabu also insists that there will not be a catchweight, thereby excluding any contract stipulation that would force him to drop down.

He stated that Canelo was the best boxer currently on the planet.

"So, I want the best fight, and I accept it, but there will not be a catchweight for this fight.

"I believe Canelo is making an enormous mistake that he will regret.

"Canelo wants people to believe he is better than the rest. I am willing to let Canelo pursue this dream. But, I have my own story to tell.

"Yes, this boxing. Tony Bellew was my opponent, but I won me back. Now, I am telling you 100 percent that I will knock out Canelo."

Canelo, 31, won belts ranging from light-middleweight to light-heavyweight.

His biggest career win was the WBO 175lb title, which he won after beating Sergey Kovalev (39), in November 2019.

However, Canelo quickly moved down to super-middleweight and has since settled in his new weight.

In just eleven months and four fights, the Mexican star became the undisputed champion.

He won over Callum Smith (31), Avni Yoldirim (30), Billy Joe Saunders (32) and Caleb Plant (29).

Canelo would make the leap to cruiserweight by gaining two more divisions.

Alvarez was even offered the opportunity to fight Makabu in DR Congo - the place where the legendary 'Rumble In the Jungle' was held in 1974.
