Carl Froch Expresses Concerns Over Saudi Takeover of Boxing and Its Potential Impact on the Sport

Money Talks: Joshua, Fury, and the Saudi Influence

Former boxing champion Carl Froch has shared his fears about the future of boxing in light of Saudi Arabia's increasing involvement in the sport. The highly anticipated fights between Anthony Joshua and Deontay Wilder, as well as Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk, will both take place in Riyadh. However, Froch raises concerns about the influence of the lucrative Saudi money and its potential impact on the wider boxing landscape.

The Golden Goose: Limited Opportunities for Fighters

Froch questions whether the Saudi takeover marks the pinnacle for the sport and raises the issue of only a select few fighters being able to cash in on the substantial financial rewards. While top-tier boxers like Joshua and Fury can benefit, Froch points out that the majority of fans cannot afford to attend fights in Saudi Arabia, making it clear that the motivation behind these decisions is primarily financial gain.

Saudi's Impact on Big Fights and Disappointment for British Fans

Froch expresses disappointment over the inability to see major fights like Joshua vs. Wilder materialize due to the influence of Saudi money. He also discusses the rescheduled Fury vs. Usyk bout, acknowledging that money ultimately controls the sport. However, he laments the fact that British fight fans will miss out on the opportunity to witness the historic clash firsthand.

While Froch understands the allure of the substantial financial rewards offered by Saudi Arabia, he urges promoters to be transparent about their motivations and not claim to be acting in the best interests of the fans. As the Saudi influence on boxing continues to grow, the future of the sport remains uncertain.
