Clay Collard started boxing to pay his car repairs... it's given him the edge over an ex-UFC star in PFL fight

CLAY COLLARD believes he is in a completely different gear than Jeremy Stephens, a PFL opponent. He took up boxing as a way to pay for a car repair.

After a long career in MMA, the American has been a professional boxer for 18 bouts. His record is 9-6-3.

Bob Arum, Hall of Fame promoter, even had him on Top Rank Bills.

Collard was back in the cage, and he signed with the Professional Fighters League. This MMA organization offers fighters the chance of winning $1million.

In the semi-finals, he lost to Anthony Pettis (35-year-old UFC champion), but was defeated by Raush Manfio (30-year-old eventual winner).

Collard, 29 years old, returns to face Stephens, 35-year-old former UFC featherweight Stephens. Stephens believes that Collard's boxing career has taken him to new heights.

He said to MMA Junkie, "One hundred percent, he feels like I have an edge over me in boxing."

"He hits hard. Everyone hits hard. I can also take a shot. Pettis probably kicked me upside the head. He still didn't put me out.

"I'm excited about this. He could swing but I just want to pick him up and take him apart. That's my plan.

PFL features a quarters-, semis-, and final format with eight fighters from eight divisions fighting for the $1m winner-take-all prize.

Collard is now a millionaire with just three fights, a far cry from five year ago when he began boxing for more money.

His motor needed to be repaired so he took a quick fight and was paid $300 for his win.

Collard recalled to MMAMania that he had wrecked his car and needed some work.

"I was training to return to mixed martial arts. "I thought I could use some cash to get by after I had totaled my car.

"I went to a boxing match. "I had just met my coach at the time and asked him, "Hey, would you mind cornering us in this boxing match?"

"He saw me fighting and thought that I was crazy."

He was like, "What are you doing taking this bout?" This guy is bigger than you. He's fought in 200 fights and he was a member of the Marine boxing team.

"I was like, Ah, we will be alright.' I won a split decision."

Collard wouldn't be able to keep his stollen ride in good condition for very long.
