TEOFIMO LOPEZ, who was in an unspecified chest condition, "could have been killed" during his fight with George Kambosos Jr.
Lopez was defeated by Kambosos who became the new unified lightweight champion, after beating Lopez last week at Madison Square Garden.
It has been revealed that The Takeover had pneumomediastinum before the fight. This is an air-filled condition in which there was air between the chests and the lungs.
The American bruiser was diagnosed after Ferocious' defeat. Dr Linda Dahl said that he could have died in the ring.
ESPN quoted Dr Dahl as saying that Dr Dahl could have died.
Kambosos won by split decision on judges scores 115-111 and 113-114.
The Australian boxing legend, who is of Greek heritage and was born in Sparta, has now won 20 fights. Half of them were by knockout.
Lopez on the other side saw his unbeaten record end when he was defeated in his 17th fight.
The result left the 24-year-old stunned. He claimed that he had won the fight. His own fans cheered his comments.
Lopez stated that "He [Kambosos] is a helluva fighter, but I won tonight. Everyone knows that."
"The referee raised his hand. I won tonight, no matter what anyone says. I would like to thank everyone who came out tonight. I am not a loser. I take my wins as seriously as I take my losses.
"At the end, I'm a true champ, I did what was necessary, and I went out and did my best.
"I don’t care what anyone says, I am just as real as them all, and this is The Takeover Man, we don’t stop, but we keep going."
Lopez said, "At night's end, I scored it 11-2-10-2."
