Eddie Hearn defends Conor Benn’s return to the ring despite UK Boxing License controversy

Eddie Hearn has addressed the controversy surrounding Conor Benn's return to boxing this weekend despite not being licensed to fight in the UK due to a doping scandal. Benn, who was sidelined for a year after two failed drug tests, will step into the ring in Orlando on Saturday night.

No License to Fight in the UK

Conor Benn, 26, has been unable to fight in the UK following his doping saga resulting in two failed drug tests. Despite this, promoter Eddie Hearn has stood by his decision to book Benn for this weekend's fight.

Cleared of Intentionally Ingesting Banned Drug

Although Benn was cleared of intentionally taking the banned fertility drug clomiphene, the National Anti-Doping Panel's verdict was appealed by UKAD and the British Boxing Board of Control. Benn, frustrated with the BBBoC, ripped up his license and is not recognized by the governing body for VADA testing.

Eligible to Fight in the US

Despite not being able to fight in the UK, Benn's ban was lifted in August by UKAD, which prompted Hearn to defend his decision to book the fighter for the Orlando match. The ABC (the governing body of America) consulted the British Boxing Board of Control to confirm Benn's eligibility to fight, leading to the Texas Athletic Commission granting him a license.

Rigorous Testing and Scrutiny

Hearn acknowledges the scrutiny surrounding Benn's return and has subjected him to extensive testing. Multiple procedures have been conducted during Benn's training camp, with additional testing requested by Florida. Hearn assures fans that Benn has been cleared to fight and dismisses claims that he is "hopping around the world to fight."

Future Plans for Benn

Despite the short-notice booking for this weekend's fight, Hearn emphasizes that the decision was not influenced by Benn's inability to fight in the UK. Benn is currently licensed with the Texas Commission and Hearn expects his next fight to take place in the UK. Plans are already in motion to request a fight for Benn in December.
