Boxer Turned Thief
A former Team GB boxer, Antonio Counihan, has avoided jail time after being part of a gang that orchestrated a nationwide black market scheme involving stolen telecoms equipment, costing BT nearly £400,000.
How the Racket Unfolded
Counihan and his accomplice used their knowledge of telecoms to steal equipment from Openreach vans by posing as workmen at secure BT exchange sites. They targeted high-value fiber optic installation kits, causing significant damage to the vans in the process.
From Boxing Ring to Courtroom
Despite facing up to six years in jail, Counihan received a 16-month suspended sentence after a judge learned about his struggles, including health issues and the end of his boxing career. Three other men involved in the racket also received suspended sentences.
The Aftermath
Following the thefts, Counihan used his share of the stolen money for a spending spree on designer clothing. He later admitted to his involvement in the crimes and detailed how his life took a downward spiral after his boxing career came to an end.
