After Mairena's knockout blow, Arnold was left motionless on the ground.

He would have been knocked out by the away fighter if he had been there.

The super-feather managed to rally in the second, which is to his credit.

He was violently dropped in the third, after losing his gumshield. Chas Coakley should have saved him.

Mairena's trainer made it clear to the referee, but he was ignored.

Arnold looked unable to continue in the time before the fourth round because his head was bent.

His corner sent him back out to try and save his skin with an unlikelyKO.

Arnold was sent to the ground by the brutal Nicaraguan veteran who has fought in almost 50 fights. Arnold is now worried.

The knockdown occurred in Mairena’s red corner, where rapid-acting medical personnel were sitting close by. They jumped into action with an oxygen mask.

Fans were afraid for the worst, so a stretcher was quickly sent to transport Arnold to the hospital.

The outside staff did a better job than those working inside the ring, who were first responsible for protecting the boxers.

In case they needed to see a straighter path, concerned ringside staff began to dismantle the corners of the rings.

There was a York Hall roar as Arnold, a 10-fight novice, regained consciousness.

Slowly, the Londoner reached a chair and finally his feet.

Groggily Arnold found his way out of the ring by himself and was taken to the hospital for standard checks and precautions.

The fight was watched by many who were outraged at its inability to be stopped sooner.

One tweeted: "Never in a million, ever should we still be allowed to take that last shot at KO." Should have been stopped. "Ref is a mess."

Another stated, "Shocking for both referees and coaching teams."

A third wrote, "F*** me! Thought the worst there. Thank Christ he got up... terrible viewing."
