Galal Yafai, Olympic gold medalist, makes her professional debut with knockout on Lawrence Okolie’s undercard

Galal Yafai, the Olympic gold medalist for Team GB, jumped into the professional ranks after he defeated Carlos Bautista in five rounds.

Yafai, 29 years old, refused to fight in the traditional intro of four or six rounds and instead signed up for a 10-round bout against a live opponent seven months after he won flyweight gold at the Tokyo Games.

He took to the game like a duck, hunting big shots, landing them on Bautista’s face and ribs until his corner was saved after five one-sided rounds.

Yafai stated: "I enjoyed it there, he was tough opponent, I caught them with big shots, and he wouldn’t go.

"It was so hard to wait for my professional debut, and it was everything that I had hoped and wished for.

"I want to be fast, I want to get up and be a world champion."

In the opener, there were whipped hooks for the body and straights that looked like arrows that cut through the guard of the visitor.

Yafai was tested for whisker when Bautista hit a left hook, but he passed and retaliated generously.

Although the 8th division is not well-known for its knockouts, Yafai was exact and punishing. He battered Bautista at round's end and came close to ending the match early.

At the beginning of the three, the Birmingham ace was again clipped but he absorbed the blows and fired off, smiling as he inflicted more damage.

Bautista's right side was a terrible mess before the third ended. His cheeks grew into his eye.

When Bautista, brave and strong, was beaten in the fifth, his team abandoned him. Yafai, compassionate, informed Mark Lyson about the surrender.

The youngest brother of the three fighters will not waste any time in setting up his next fight as he strives to become a world champion within his first 10 professional bouts.
