GENNADY GOLOVKIN and Ryota Murata have been delayed due to Japan closing its borders because of the Covid-19 Omicron version.
After the December 29 clash for the middleweight title was abandoned, the 39-year old will have to wait a bit longer to get his chance at being a two-time unified champ.
Gennady and Ryota Murata's clash has been postponed
Triple G confirmed the news via Twitter. He wrote: "I am deeply sorry that fight in Japan was postponed, but the safety and health of the public must always remain the priority." I look forward to returning as soon as possible to the ring to face Ryota."
Japan has recently implemented new Covid restrictions that ban foreigners from entering the country.
This new ruling was made Monday to stop the spread and propagation of the Omicron variant.
Officials from the Fight had hoped to get an exemption for Golovkin from Japan's government. However, that request was denied.
The Kazakhstan star has been training for the fight in Hollywood, Florida. But now, the fight will be rescheduled to 2022.
Golovkin turns 40 on April 1. He has held the IBF title and the IBO titles since October 2019, when he defeated Sergiy Derevyanchenko, but has only competed once in the ring.
GGG had the opportunity to win another belt in the WBA showdown against Murata.
Murata, 35 years old, said that he last fought in December 2019.
"This fight will decide my place in the middleweight category and boxing history.
"GennadiyGolovkin has been the standard bearer in the middleweight division for a long time. He is unbeaten to my knowledge. He has my highest respect."
