The Fight
GERALD MCCLELLAN is the living embodiment and brutal reminder of the dangers of boxing – which are all too often forgotten about. The American middleweight was at the peak of his powers in the early nineties and was, at the time, regarded by many to be one of the best fighters on the planet.
The Tragic Consequences
McClellan challenged Nigel Benn for the WBC super-middleweight title in February 1995. The fight took a tragic turn when McClellan showed signs of having suffered a traumatic brain injury during the match.
The Aftermath
Doctors discovered a blood clot and extensive brain damage, leading to emergency surgery to save his life. McClellan remained in a coma for 11 days, losing his eyesight, 80% of his hearing, and the ability to walk unaided.
Life Today
Despite some improvements in walking ability, McClellan spends most days in an armchair. His once sharp mind is now a shadow of its former self, a tragic reminder of the price he paid for his boxing career.
A Reunion and Reflection
Twelve years after their fateful fight, Benn and McClellan reunited for a benefit event to raise funds for McClellan's care. Benn expressed mixed emotions about the event, reflecting on the impact their fight had on McClellan's life.
