Jaime Munguia is Mexico's next superstar. He's trained by Erik Morales, and wants to have a 'historical' rivalry with Canelo.

JAIME MUNGUIA is Mexico's next great hope – and already has boxing royalty behind him.

Erik Morales, the legendary trainer of the former light-middleweight champion, is currently training the fighter. He was once in a fierce rivalry with Antonio Barrera.

Jaime Munguia was a former champion light-middleweight.

Munguia, who is still just 25, cannot even imagine a trilogy like this with Canelo Alvarez (currently boxing's most popular attraction).

Morales will be his guide to an all-Mexican fight.

Fernando Beltran introduced the pair and Munguia became his idol.

SunSport spoke to Mungia: "I have always loved Erik.

"He's a great idol of my and he was a very technical fighter. He was entertaining to watch and had a great defense.

"He was very skilled and had great attacks. He was also a complete fighter. It was always very entertaining to watch him fight.

"My favorite fight was with Daniel Zaragoza. He won the world title."

Munguia, a 21-year old, won the WBO title against Sadam Ali (2018). He made five defenses against Britain's Liam Smith before moving up.

He is now at middleweight and has won three of his previous fights. He also returns to face veteran American Gabriel Rosado this weekend.

He will face his greatest test at 160lb, which is the same division in which Munguia was denied the opportunity to fight Gennady Gorlovkin by Nevada's commission in 2018.

He stated, "I have much to prove in the new weight division."

"I'm ready for everyone to see what I can do, I'm ready show everyone what I've learned through my experiences and that I'm an excellent fighter."

Rosado, now 35, has a long and successful 41-fight career, with many ups as well as downs. This is enough to support his role in Creed (2015), a Rocky spinoff movie.

He defeated Bektemir Melikuziev (25-year-old) in his last fight. This was a stark reminder of his enormous killing power.

Munguia stated: "I believe Gabriel will come out to box, use his jab. However, Gabriel is an experienced fighter so I need to be careful.

"I believe I must be ready for what Gabe can do in the ring, and be able to adapt to it.

"But of course, I will make sure that I fight the fight the best I can and take full control of the evening."

Munguia was not allowed to fill in for Canelo, who was on a six-month ban from drugs. He was due to appear before GGG at late notice nearly four years ago because of safety concerns.

The heavy-hitter, who at 16 turned professional in the Olympics, has settled at middleweight and is now aiming to fight Kazakhstan's 39 year-old danger man.

He has moved up to middleweight, putting him in touch with Canelo (31-year-old undisputed supermiddleweight champion).

Alvarez long yearns for a Mexican counterpart to share the spotlight. He failed to do so in 2017 with Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., 35.

Morales, Munguia's trainer, came in second place in his epic trilogy series of three with Barrera that ran from 2000 to 2004.

Munguia has tried to recreate the fight with Canelo, but it is still etched in boxing fans' minds.

He stated, "I believe that would be something historical." For all boxing fans, it would be an exciting fight.

It would be a great conflict. You can expect me to apply great pressure. This is what Mexican fighters do.

"It would be a thrilling war for all of the fans."
