After a warrant was issued for him, Jermall Charlo, WBC champion middleweight, surrendered to police.
According to reports, the 31-year old, who is 32-0 as an professional, assaulted a San Antonio waiter on July 16. He then took off with his tips after a card he attempted to use to pay for a bill was repeatedly declined.
Jermall (left), is a world champion at two-weight, and his brother Jermell is the unified world champion.
The warrant states that Charlo then took two black waiter books and removed his ID and cash.
The boxer and his buddies escaped the building, according to reports. They then took off in a limousine bus.
Charlo's group may have stepped on the waitress as they were leaving. This is believed to have caused a lower leg injury.
Kent A. Schaffer, Charlo's lawyer, sent KSAT News an email that read: "I represent Jermall Charlo. I just saw your article regarding his case.
Jermall did not steal money from the club or make threats to anyone. After running his card, it was declined. He then received a Chase Bank fraud alert asking him if he had made that charge.
"He replied yes, and they advised him to submit the charge again. The waitress ran it again, and returned saying that she couldn't find the card. Jermall was angry that his card was missing because it was a debit-card tied to a large amount of money.
The waitress' license was sticking out of her portfolio. He took it back and said that he didn’t want her to lose it. Jermall was now in the hall with many club employees. His handlers wanted him to leave the club before any trouble began. A club employee helped Jermall get to his car.
"Hours later Jermall’s assistant reached out to the club to provide them with another credit card number, but the club refused to take it.
"Over the past few weeks, we have spoken to the police and prosecutors as well as the club owner. Although the owner expressed his desire for the charges to be dropped, the officer insisted that Jermall be charged.
"He never robbed anyone or took any property other that his own at any time."
Charlo was in San Antonio for Jermell's fight against Brian Castano for the world title. The bout ended in a draw.
Jermall won his last fight in June against Juan Macias Montiel, a unanimous decision.
