From Boxercise to Boxing Champ
Nina Hughes, a 40-year-old super-mum, has defied all odds to become a world champion in boxing. She initially started boxing at the age of 25, but it was only after six months of training and persuasion from her coach that she decided to step into the ring. What began as a way to lose baby weight quickly turned into a passion for the sport.
A Break to Start a Family
After missing out on the London 2012 Olympics, Hughes decided to hang up her gloves and start a family. She welcomed her first son, Leo, into the world and took a break from boxing. Little did she know that becoming a mother would reignite her love for the sport.
A Comeback and Pro Career
After putting on weight and wanting to get back in shape, Hughes set herself a goal of having one fight to motivate her. She fell back in love with boxing and started enjoying it again. She went on to become a four-time national amateur champion and even boxed until her last week of maternity leave. Inspired by the rise of women's boxing during the pandemic, Hughes decided to turn professional at the age of 39.
Juggling Motherhood and Boxing
Despite her demanding schedule as a professional boxer, Hughes continues to work as a legal secretary. She has gone part-time and makes use of her lunch breaks for training. Her bosses have been extremely supportive, attending her fights and even flying out to watch her world title fight in Dubai. Hughes credits her employers for making it easier for her to pursue her boxing career while juggling her responsibilities as a parent.

From Underdog to World Champion
In November 2022, Hughes traveled to Dubai as an underdog to face Jamie Mitchell for the world title. However, she shocked everyone by defeating Mitchell on points and becoming a 40-year-old world champion. Hughes had always believed in her ability to win and was 100% confident going into the fight.
Unifying the Division
Now a world champion, Hughes has her sights set on unifying the bantamweight division. She had previously chased a fight with Ebanie Bridges, but since Bridges lost the belt, Hughes is now targeting Miyo Yoshida. Her ultimate goal is to become the undisputed 118lb queen by holding all the belts in the division.
Nina Hughes has proven that with determination, hard work, and the support of her loved ones, anything is possible. She is an inspiration to aspiring athletes and parents alike, showing that it is possible to achieve your dreams while juggling multiple responsibilities.
