Opetaia's jaw was broken in two places

Opetaia might have easily defeated Briedis but he had the courage to overcome the pain barrier after his jaw was broken by a nasty uppercut during the second round.

The 27-year old shared photos on Twitter of his fractured jaw. It was broken in two places.

He then followed up with a smiling post-operation selfie and wrote across the image, "Surgery success!"

Opetaia's trainer Mark Wilson did not learn about the horrific injury until the penultimate fight.

Fox Sports told him that he didn't realize it was broken until the 11th Round, when it became apparent that there was something seriously wrong with it.

"I think we were two to three rounds ahead, I thought. We were losing a few late.

"I said, 'Just move, mate. We have to move. Do not do anything foolish. "Move, move. We made it through."

Opetaia is able to resume training within two months, but it will take at least five more months before he can return in the ring.

Ringside doctor Ben Mannion stated that bones can give you about 80 percent strength back in eight weeks. He'll likely be able to light train again after that period.

"It will take three, four, and five months (until the man can fight again).

"One of the men asked if it breaks on both sides after it has broken on one side. I replied, "People don't normally compete afterwards."

Opetaia has already identified a potential opponent for his first title defense: Lawrence Okolie, WBO cruiserweight king.

Dean Lonergan, promoter of the fight, said that he was certain that he would like to continue fighting and beating the best fighters in the world once his injury has healed. This will help him to leave a lasting legacy.

"I am exploring options. Jai hopes to win the WBO title after this fight. If the deal is done well and all parties are on the same page it will be a fight Jai wants.

"Jai is determined to unify the division and, given that he is currently rated as the best cruiserweight worldwide, it is possible."
