Eight years later, the American legend topped all-time boxoffice buys after his victory over Manny Pacquiao. The 4.6 million PPVs were sold by Pacquiao.
De La Hoya, however, claimed that a rematch against Mayweather would be a smashing success despite the fact that both of them are now retired.
DAZN was informed by him that he believes a Floyd Mayweather fight would be huge. Floyd Mayweather would be attracted to that fight alone.
"I believe a fight between Floyd and me can easily generate five millions homes.
"With all of the technology, there are so many things you can incorporate in terms publicising the event and making it even bigger.
"You now have the metaworlds, the NFT’s. That whole social media platform is yours. It can be quite large."
After being overtaken by Pacquiao (43), the Filipino icon, De La Hoya, 48 hung up her gloves in 2008.
The Golden Boy announced in March 2021 that he would be making a comeback to boxing and signed later last year to fight Vitor Belfort (44).
De La Hoya was eventually discharged after being in hospital following a violent bout with Covid.
A few months prior, Mayweather had also returned to the ring in an exhibit with Logan Paul (26), who was also there.
He is currently in talks with Money Kicks, a 20-year old vlogger - real name Rashed Belaca - to host a February 20 exhibition at a Dubai HELIPAD.
De La Hoya, however, slammed this farcical fight and asked for Mayweather's fight instead.
He stated that he was all about the money. He said that this would be the most difficult fight he could face.
"I believe it would surpass McGregor fighting. It would be more than him fighting Logan Paul, or any other fighter he might face next.
"I believe that people want to see fights. People want to see champion versus champion, legend versus legend.
"This is what you do. This is what we have done practically our entire lives.
People want to see real fights. They want to see legends in the ring.
"Fighters such as Floyd Mayweather, Manny Pacquiao and myself are legends who put it all on the line. We were in the ring many years and fought for world titles for decades.
