Canelo, who was under the guidance of the boxing legend, drew with GGG on 2017 but won the rematch one year later.

Eddie Hearn promoted the fight for the trilogy, which was almost a decade in making.

It ended with Canelo taking the win by unanimous decision in the most boring bout of the series.

De La Hoya watched the action from ringside and posted this Instagram message: "I was falling asleep, until @holly.sinders grabbed me ass."

The trilogy fight, four years after Canelo won the rematch, did not live up to its billing but it did settle the matter once and for all.

Canelo said: "Thank you so much my friend. We are grateful for all your help.

"We gave three great fights to the fans and we thank you for everything. OK."

Canelo, 32 and Golovkin, 40 agreed to be embraced by Canelo in the middle.

GGG stated: "I want canelo to shake hands with me, congrats.

"The guy is a true warrior, and if you don’t understand him, you don’t understand anything."

Golovkin, still holding the WBA, IBF, and IBO titles looks set to retire.

He said, "Remember guys. I still have three belts at 160. I will be back, guys. I'm still champion guys."
