"Rookie error" - Errol Sence Jr responds in Yordenis Ugas fight controversy, as referee stops action during the onslaught

ERROL SPENCE JR acknowledged that he made a rookie mistake against Yordenis Urgas by forgetting the golden rule of boxing.

Ugas was defeated by Spence in ten rounds at his Texas home. He is now the WBA welterweight champion.

It was a big scare for the American unbeaten, who was injured in round six.

Ugas took a uppercut on Spence, slamming his gumshield and sending it to the ground.

Ugas continued to punch as the Texan stopped searching for his mouthpiece.

Spence crashed into the ropes with wobbly legs, and the unification champion was clearly hurt.

Spence leaves Ugas' eye horribly swollen so that Crawford can super-fight

Ugas was quickly stopped by the referee and Spence was able to get his mouthguard back in.

It also gave him time to heal, which is exactly what the southpaw star did.

Spence turned the tide in the next round to harm Ugas, and round ten saw the Cuban's eye so swelling that the fight was abandoned.

The controversial break in play was discussed by the newly-crowned three belt welterweight champion.

Spence stated: "Well, well, I thought that the ref had told me to stop so I stopped, and then he hit my with three or four shots.

"So that was my fault. That was rookie error by me. You are supposed to be safe at all times, and that is what I did.

"I was not out on my feet. I turned to search for my mouthpiece, and then he hit me. I was like, "Ah, s ***'.'."

"Then, he just kept hitting my face and I was like, "Ah damn!" He stopped, and I was able to raise my hands. The ref had already jumped in."

Spence was able to recover and beat Ugas by stoppage. He then called Terence Crawford, 34, into an undisputed superfight.

He stated, "Everybody knows whom I want next. I want Terence Crawford next."
