After flooring Ruiz in Los Angeles, the Cuban veteran, Ruiz took his foot off of the gas.
After 12 rounds, Zachary Young's and Eddie Hernandez Sr.'s scorecards read 111-112 twice in favor of Ruiz.
Fernando Villarreal, 32, had it 112-113 to him, which meant that the verdict was unanimous.
In reality, Ortiz (43 years old) would have won on Villarreal's deck if he had not lost three points for being dropped.
Ortiz won seven rounds of the official's match, Young and Hernandez each winning six.
Ruiz's knockdowns earned him three more points, which made him a winner.
Ortiz, who suffered a right hand injury that left him with severe injuries, ended the fight in a closed eye. However, he is now requesting a second fight.
He stated, "I want a match." He said that he was not able to see my eyes, but I kept my hands open.
"After this, do you think that I'm done?" What do people want?
Ruiz hasn't been back in world title contention since beating Anthony Joshua 32 years ago. He lost the rematch six month later.
He now wants to be a boxer again, and has vowed that he will reign.
Ruiz shouted, "I don't want to wait so long. I want to fight at minimum three to four times per year."
"I'm ready. I'm hungry man. I want to be champion once again, I want that belt to return to Mexico.
