The top 10 pound-for–pound boxers are ranked following Canelo Alvarez’s shocking defeat by Dmitry Bivol, Fury, Usyk, but not Joshua

DMITRY BIVOL ripped the script, the book and all the pointless pound for pound lists at the weekend – so we had another crack.

So Canelo Alvarez was expected to defeat the Russian underdog, so Gennady Glovkin could fight the largest cash cow in boxing in September's mega-money third bout.

Fury, the heavyweight champion, is still one of the biggest boxing stars

It turned out that the 31-year-old Mexican was too heavy for her. She was completely outpointed, and now she wants a dangerous rematch.

This shock result brings to the forefront all of the interminable debates about who is best fighter across all weight classes. Who would win if you took all positive and negative attributes from a 6ft 9in, 19st Tyson Fury, and put them against a 5ft 8ster such as Roman 'Chocolatito'Gonzalez?

These lists are not something anyone in their right mind enjoys. Nobody is going to agree.

After a few spectacular nights of boxing in 2022, here's how we see the land.

10) Roman "Chocolatito" Gonzalez - super-fly, 34

The top 10 pound-for–pound boxers are ranked following Canelo Alvarez’s shocking defeat by Dmitry Bivol, Fury, Usyk, but not Joshua
Gonzalez is widely considered one of the greatest flyweight champions ever.

This is a stunning record with 51-3 and a staggering 41 in the distance. It was across the smallest divisions, where KOs are a rare find.

Juan Francisco Estrada's 2021 defeat was a setback to Nicaraguan form and status as a P4P member. However, Estrada had already defeated his Mexican counterpart back in 2012.

He was a lighter man, but his feat of dismantling dangerous Mexican banger Julio Cesar Martinez in march was exemplary and brought back the memory of his greatness.

9) Gervonta Davis - lightweight - 27

Davis is one the most powerful punchers in boxing, at pound-for-pound

Although the Baltimore banger is one the most exciting fighters in the sport, he still attracts controversy. He will be criticized by his harshest critics for picking opponents to win in the three divisions. His fans will proclaim that he is a natural talent and a danger to all.

Rolando Romero, leftie assassin, will face him on May 28, and even a highlight reel win in KO will not help his stock. His place on any P4P list will be hard to dispute if he has a few more household names.

8) Dmitry Bivol - light-heavyweight - 31

The top 10 pound-for–pound boxers are ranked following Canelo Alvarez’s shocking defeat by Dmitry Bivol, Fury, Usyk, but not Joshua
Bivol shocked Canelo to defend his world light-heavyweight title

Before going against Canelo, the Russian had been inactive for almost five years. The bookies gave little hope to Canelo so he was placed in this list with his dominant UD win.

Many people didn't see the masterclass coming after six previous points wins were somewhat disappointing. A battle with Artur Beterbiev, a fellow world champion, remains the 12st 7lbs fight most fight fans would like to see. This list would be topped by the winner of the all-Soviet slugfest.

7) Vasiliy Lomachenko - lightweight - 34

The top 10 pound-for–pound boxers are ranked following Canelo Alvarez’s shocking defeat by Dmitry Bivol, Fury, Usyk, but not Joshua
Lomachenko won twice after his defeat to Teofimo Lopez in a unanimous decision

Before Teofimo Lopez's 2020 defeat, Teofimo Lopez was the Olympic champion and fastest man to win three world titles. He was also No1 in most people. This shows how fast and cruel the sport is and how ridiculous these lists can be.

Loma's two victories in convincing fashion since his second defeat seem to have remediated any mental or physical issues. His record is now 16-2.

Tragically, the little Ukrainian genius - a natural featherweight competitor in a few classes above – is now fighting against Russian forces, putting his career on hold. Even if his career ends tomorrow, he will be remembered as an all-time great.

6) Josh Taylor - super-lightweight - 31

The top 10 pound-for–pound boxers are ranked following Canelo Alvarez’s shocking defeat by Dmitry Bivol, Fury, Usyk, but not Joshua
Taylor was controversially defending his super-lightweight titles against Catterall

Although the 19-0 Scot was not at fault for Jack Catterall's win, his air of invincibility is definitely diminished.

Taylor was a British boxing legend prior to this bout. He had won undisputed 10th glory by racing against the best and beating them convincingly.

Taylor will need to rematch Catterall in order to be able move forward with his career. The outcome could have an important impact on his position on these subjective lists.

There are a few fights that will make his reputation better, such as a jump up to welterweight.

5) Oleksandr Usyk - heavyweight - 35

The top 10 pound-for–pound boxers are ranked following Canelo Alvarez’s shocking defeat by Dmitry Bivol, Fury, Usyk, but not Joshua
Joshua will be beaten by Usyk for the second time in this summer's boxing match

After being crowned undisputed cruiserweight champion, the 2012 Olympic gold medalist looked weak in his first two heavyweight bouts. But he made a mockery out of his doubters in September when he trained Anthony Joshua to win three heavyweight world titles.

Southpaw's mastermind hasn't boxed in Ukraine since 2015, and unfortunately Russia's invasion may make it impossible. This makes his 19-0 record even more impressive and his belt collection even more impressive.

He could be elevated further by a second victory over AJ or a fight with Fury and Deontay Wilder.

4) Naoya Inoue - bantamweight - 29

The top 10 pound-for–pound boxers are ranked following Canelo Alvarez’s shocking defeat by Dmitry Bivol, Fury, Usyk, but not Joshua
Inoue is a man of great fear in the lighter weight categories

Japan's pocket rocket has now set a new record of 22-0 with 19 within the distance and three world titles.

He is 5ft 5in tall and flies under the boxing mainstream radar. However, his stunning 2019 points win with Nonito Donaire was box-office action. Fans were desperate for the rematch on June 7, and would be happy to see him become undisputed.

3) Tyson Fury, heavyweight - 33

The top 10 pound-for–pound boxers are ranked following Canelo Alvarez’s shocking defeat by Dmitry Bivol, Fury, Usyk, but not Joshua
Fury ended Whyte's reign as the best heavyweight fighter in the world, solidifying his position.

This 6ft 9in switch hitter can now punch 19t and dance like a middleweight. Add to that a Mensa-level Ring IQ and the most bizarre powers of recovery and it's hard to imagine how anyone could beat this Gypsy King.

It will be difficult to maintain the top spot after an era-defining victory over Joshua's victor in a Usyk vs Joshua match.

2) Canelo Alvarez - super-middleweight - 31

The top 10 pound-for–pound boxers are ranked following Canelo Alvarez’s shocking defeat by Dmitry Bivol, Fury, Usyk, but not Joshua
Canelo continues to be in the pound for pound conversation despite losing to Bivol

The 57-22-2 four-weight icon should not be punished for daring be great and attacking light-heavyweight, especially since so many of his peers and rivals play the hurt game much more safely.

The legacy of the 31-year old is secure and his work to climb from 10st 7lbs to 12st 7lbs will be remembered. Two controversial decisions against Gennady and Bivol are the last marks of a remarkable blueprint for how boxing should be done. A clash with the 6ft Russian could cause serious damage to the Mexican's reputation and health. He should return to super-middle, where he is still undisputed king.

1) Terence Crawford - welterweight - 34

The top 10 pound-for–pound boxers are ranked following Canelo Alvarez’s shocking defeat by Dmitry Bivol, Fury, Usyk, but not Joshua
Crawford is SunSport's No1 fighter, pound for pound.

After Canelo's defeat, the 38-0 three-weight champion of the world took to Twitter to proclaim himself P4P numero uno. It is difficult to disagree when you see his numbers.

A staggering 29 of the switch-hitters' wins were within the distance. They have faced stars such as Shawn Porter and Kell Brook. His resume is lacking a clash with Errol Spence, his long-time rival.
