Boxer Agron Smakici insists the cut he accidentally inflicted on Tyson Fury was not intentional

Tyson Fury's highly anticipated four-belt heavyweight unification fight against Oleksandr Usyk was postponed after Fury suffered a gruesome cut in sparring. The incident, which required over ten stitches, led to speculation that Croatian heavyweight Agron Smakici intentionally landed an elbow on Fury. However, Smakici has now come forward to set the record straight and claim that it was an accidental punch, not an intentional blow.

Unintended Consequences

Smakici revealed that the sparring session took place in Saudi Arabia and was initiated by Irishman Thomas Carty. Smakici then joined as a fresh sparring partner for Fury. However, after just three rounds, the incident occurred that caused the cut. Smakici maintains that he threw a punch, but due to Fury pulling his head forward, it may have unintentionally landed as an elbow strike. He insists that he did not mean to cause any harm to Fury.

Fury's Showmanship and Smakici's Return

During the two weeks that Smakici spent in Fury's camp, the 33-year-old boxer tried his best to replicate Usyk's elusive southpaw style. However, he was met with Fury's trademark showmanship and banter during their sparring sessions. Smakici described Fury's colorful language and tricks, adding that the sparring was interesting and very good until the unfortunate incident occurred in the third round.

Looking Ahead

Smakici, with a 20-2 boxing record and experience as a sparring partner for Anthony Joshua, hopes to be welcomed back into Fury's camp despite the freak injury. He expressed his desire to support Fury in his preparation for future fights and even joked about wearing elbow protection. Smakici praised Fury's team for their understanding and appreciation of his efforts.

It seems that the accident has not strained the relationship between Fury and Smakici, leaving the door open for future collaborations.
