Background
Tim Tomashek holds the honor of being the unlikeliest heavyweight title challenger in boxing history. He was plucked from the crowd just hours before competing for the WBO belt against Tommy Morrison.
A Last-Minute Replacement
Tommy Morrison was set to defend his WBO heavyweight title against Mike Williams in 1993. However, Williams, who had missed several media obligations, refused to leave his dressing room, putting the main event in jeopardy. In a race against time, manager Bruce Trampler turned to Tomashek, who was in the crowd as a fan and a potential backup.
From Beer Drinker to Fighter
Tomashek, who was drinking beer and enjoying the fight as a spectator, didn't expect to get the call to step into the ring. But when offered $2,500 just for showing up, he quickly agreed and went backstage to do a hasty warm-up while under the influence. Two hours later, he emerged for the biggest fight of his career.
The Fight
Tomashek put up a valiant effort as a short-notice replacement, but ultimately suffered a fourth-round TKO defeat. He retired on the stool but made viewers laugh with his witty one-liners during the post-fight interview.

Morrison's Cluelessness
Tommy Morrison was completely unaware of the switcheroo of opponents until he arrived at the Kemper Arena. He admitted that his unfamiliar opponent was simply there to survive the fight.
Aftermath
Tomashek went on to have 20 more fights before retiring in 1996 with a TKO victory. Morrison, on the other hand, lost his WBO title to Michael Bennett just two months later.
