Vasyl Lomachenko renounced the chance to win world titles against George Kambosos Jr. to fight for Ukraine's front line

Vasyl Lomachenko, a former lightweight world champion, has been called a hero for giving up his chance to fight in Ukraine.

Ukrainian media reported that Lomachenko joined Belgorod-Dniester Terror Defence Battalion shortly after Russia invaded his country.

His service to his country halted his plans for a world title shot

He was wearing an army uniform and a machine gun over his shoulder.

Promoter Bob Arum revealed that Lomachenko's team and George Kambosos Jr. had reached a "deal in principle" to fight.

The 34-year old's service in Ukraine means that Australian Kambosos may be close to pursuing an alternative opponent.

Lomachenko is just one of many Ukrainian boxers who joined the fight against Russia, along with the Klitscko brothers, and Oleksandr Uzyk.

Fight Club was told by Arum that Vasiliy had been training in Greece before the conflict broke out.

He said, "Now what he could have done was fly -- it was impossible to fly into Ukraine -- so instead he flew back home to Romania and bought a car to drive over the border to be there with his family and to enlist in defense of Ukraine."

Lomachenko lost his belts against Teofimo Lopez in 2020. However, two wins since then have put him on the brink of another title fight.

However, Vladimir Putin's invasion of Ukraine caused Lomachenko to return home to defend his country.

This effectively scuppered a June fight against Kambosos in Australia.

Arum said that he felt his obligation to Ukrainens and that he would fight against Russian aggression.

This to me is true heroism. It was not only that, but it also hit the pocketbook. Lou DiBella and I had a principle agreement for him to fight Kambosos at Australia in June. That fight is now in doubt because he is fighting for his people in Ukraine."

Devin Haney, an American hard hitter, is an alternative opponent to Lomachenko.

Eddie Hearn last week confirmed that talks had been initiated between the two camps.

Ryan Garcia and Gervonta are also being considered as possible next Kambosos bouts.
