Alexander Volkanovski faced a brutal defeat at UFC 294, leaving him with two horrific cuts after being knocked out by Islam Makhachev.
Renewed Rivalry
The dominant featherweight champion, Alexander Volkanovski, stepped into the Octagon on Saturday night to renew his rivalry with lightweight counterpart, Islam Makhachev, in the main event of UFC 294 in Abu Dhabi.
Brutal Knockout
Volkanovski's bid to exact revenge on Makhachev quickly crumbled in the first round when he was brutally knocked out by a head kick. Makhachev targeted the inside leg of Volkanovski throughout the round before delivering a devastating blow to the head.
Makhachev's shin rattled and split open Volkanovski's eyebrow, causing him to wobble and eventually fall to the canvas. Seizing the opportunity, Makhachev unleashed a flurry of ground and pound strikes on the bloodied Volkanovski, solidifying his victory.

Horrific Cuts
As Volkanovski rose to his feet, he displayed two gaping cuts on his head. Particularly gruesome was a horror-movie-like wound on his right eyebrow that was seeping blood.
Acknowledging Makhachev's Skill
Despite the defeat, Volkanovski showed sportsmanship and gave credit to Makhachev. He acknowledged Makhachev's great set-up and kick, admitting that it was tough for him to accept the loss.
Looking Ahead
Volkanovski is already eyeing a quick turnaround and is eager to face surging featherweight contender Ilia Topuria in January. He expressed his desire to stay busy and emphasized that he doesn't do well when he's not fighting. Volkanovski plans to take care of his injuries and then return to the featherweight division.
Despite the disappointment, Volkanovski acknowledged that his job in the lightweight division is done for now and gave credit to Makhachev for his impressive performance.
