Dana White, president of UFC, will meet Gable Steveson, Olympic gold medalist wrestler, this weekend.
Steveson, 21 years old, was open to the idea of competing as a mixed martial artist before winning gold in Tokyo for Team USA last month.
Gable Steveson, Olympic gold medallist in mixed martial art, is interested in competing
A few days after his win in the final of the men’s 125kg freestyle wrestling tournament, the Minnesota Golden Gopher sent a wave-emoji tweet at White.
That tweet set up a meeting between White and White. White told TMZ that "[Gable] would be in town this weekend and I think we will hook up and discuss.
He still has a lot to do before he can get to the UFC. We'll just have to wait and see what happens."
White will need to act quickly in order to secure the services of Steveson, as WWE chief Vince McMahon already made offers to lure him to the company.
SunSport spoke with Steveson earlier this month. He said, "I haven’t really thought about the next step."
"I told everyone I was going home to relax and pick the best for me and what's next.
"I could win double gold in 2024. I could see Vince McMahon, who has reached out personally to me to perform WWE.
"Or, I could go to Dana White. "I mean, even [Minnesota] Vikings sent me a message.
"All options are available, all doors are open.
"I will choose the best option. However, as of now, I am not certain. I'm gonna keep searching.
"I have the whole world to explore, and I'm just going to step in that door and let it all open for me."
Steveson isn't ready to make any quick decisions about his future but he admits that the possibility of competing in mixed martial arts appeals to Steveson.
He stated that he was a long-term follower of MMA. I have been following MMA for a while.
"I feel like I've been crowned the worst heavyweight in Olympic wrestling. To bring home the gold medal.
"For me, to go out and bring a UFC title home, at the heavyweight section too, could cement my status as the worst man ever."
"Who wouldn’t want to be the best at both their job and be the worst man in two things at once?"
"I can do it myself, I know that I can."
