From Homelessness to MMA Stardom
MMA fighter Impa Kasanganay has come a long way in just one year. The 29-year-old, who was homeless and living in his car outside a gym in Miami, is now on the verge of winning the Professional Fighters League's (PFL) $1 million prize. Kasanganay will face off against Josh Silveira in the PFL final for the light-heavyweight title and the chance to secure his financial future.
A Remarkable Journey
Kasanganay's rise in the MMA world has been nothing short of extraordinary. Despite holding degrees in accounting and finance, he only started training in MMA in 2017 at the age of 24. After going 5-0, he was discovered by the UFC and won two bouts on Dana White’s Contender Series. However, after four fights and only two wins, he was released by the UFC.
Undeterred, Kasanganay used the setback as motivation and continued his fighting career. He had two more fights and then entered the PFL's Challenger Series, which eventually led to his qualification for the PFL's season. In the season, fighters earn points based on their method of victory and the top four move on to the knockout stages. Kasanganay made it to the final after a points and submission win in the semis and a knockout victory over Marthin Hamlet.
Turning Setbacks into Opportunities
Reflecting on his UFC release, Kasanganay believes it was a blessing in disguise. He explained that it was challenging to secure fights in the UFC, but in the PFL, he gets to stay active and fight regularly. His UFC exit turned out to be the best thing that could have happened to him, as it paved the way for his current success.

The Struggle to Stay Afloat
During his period of inactivity in the cage, Kasanganay faced financial struggles. Despite working as a personal trainer, at a restaurant, and in finance, he found it difficult to make ends meet. Rather than moving back in with his parents in North Carolina, he decided to live out of his car outside a gym in Florida. The challenging experience taught him self-reliance and provided moments of peace amidst the difficulties.
A Dream Worth Pursuing
Throughout it all, Kasanganay's dream of becoming a world champion kept him going. He maintained a rigorous training schedule, waking up at 6am to hit the gym and visualizing his future success. Now, with a house in Florida and just one fight away from achieving his dream, Kasanganay's hard work and determination are paying off.
He acknowledges that life has changed dramatically, but he still appreciates the simple things. He envisions a future with a farm and a ranch, and knows that having a little more money will make those dreams a reality.
