Inspired by the UFC
Donn Davis, an investor and former lawyer, entered the MMA business with the goal of rivaling the UFC. Davis, who has spent decades building sports and media companies, saw an opportunity in the market after the UFC sold for $4.4 billion in 2016.
The Birth of the Professional Fighters League
Davis wanted to create a promotion that would challenge the UFC but with a unique twist. In 2018, he launched the Professional Fighters League (PFL), which follows a seasonal format. Fighters earn points based on their method of victory, with the top four progressing to the semi-final knockout stages. The PFL culminates in a series of winner-take-all finale fights, where champions not only win a belt but also a $1 million cash prize.
A Meritocracy in the Cage
Davis emphasizes that title shots in the PFL are not determined by popularity, but by performance in the cage. He believes in a true meritocracy, where athletes earn their way to the top through victories. This sets the PFL apart from other promotions, such as the UFC.
Growing Roster and Celebrity Investors
The PFL is gaining traction with a growing roster of fighters, including former UFC champion Francis Ngannou and YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul. The promotion has also attracted celebrity investors, such as baseball icon Alex Rodriguez and a recent $100 million investment from Saudi Arabia.

Aiming for Co-Leadership
Davis initially set out to build a strong second-place company in MMA but has revised his goals. He now aims for the PFL to be a co-leader in the industry, alongside the UFC.
Expanding Opportunities
The PFL is expanding its reach with the debut of its European season and plans to launch a pay-per-view "super-fight" series in 2024. This series, separate from the league, will feature the likes of Ngannou and Paul. The 2023 season of the PFL will conclude on November 24 in Washington, DC.
With its unique format and growing roster of top fighters, the PFL is making waves in the MMA world and posing a real challenge to the dominance of the UFC. Only time will tell if they can truly rival the industry giant.
