Former UFC champion Israel Adesanya has found himself in hot water after pleading guilty to drink driving. The shocking incident occurred just three weeks before his recent world title defeat.
Caught in his native Auckland
Adesanya was pulled over by the police in his hometown of Auckland, New Zealand on August 19. The fighter had attended a dinner with friends before being stopped by law enforcement.
Exceeding the legal limit
During the breathalyzer test, Adesanya was found to have 87 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood – which is 37mg over the legal limit.
A guilty plea
The 34-year-old appeared at Auckland District Court on Monday and entered a guilty plea to the charge. The offense carries a maximum penalty of three months in prison or a £2,189 fine.
A sincere apology
In a statement, Adesanya expressed remorse for his actions: "I want to apologize to the community, my family, and my team for the decision I made to get behind the wheel after drinking at dinner. I know that people might follow me, and I want them to know I do not think this behavior is acceptable."
A setback in the octagon
Ironically, Adesanya's arrest for drink driving came shortly before his second reign as the middleweight champion came to an unexpected end. He suffered a unanimous decision defeat to Sean Strickland at UFC 293 earlier this month.
No excuses
Despite his loss, Adesanya took full responsibility and offered no excuses for his performance: "He just never let me get into my rhythm at all. Just wasn't able to get my rhythm because of his pressure. Good game plan from their end, but also from me, I wasn’t able to adjust on the fly."
