The Canadian legend then took to Instagram to announce that he was quitting the sport.
MacDonald, 33 years old, wrote: "My time is now to put down the gloves for good.
"I am so grateful for this sport and all the people I have met along the way.
"I began this sport when I was 14 years old. I can still recall my first day and know that this is what I want to spend my entire life doing.
"My passion for martial arts and my journey to becoming a pro fighter in mma gave me hope and helped me get a better life.
"And I'm so grateful to god that that gym toshido ma in kelowna was in my path.
It truly saved my life and changed the direction of mine!"
MacDonald began his fight career fighting in Canada's regional ring, but he signed for the UFC as an undefeated fighter in 2010.
In 2015, he challenged Robbie Lawler for the title but lost. This fight was regarded as one of the greatest of all time.
MacDonald moved on to Bellator, where he won the 2018 welterweight title.
After four years, he switched to PFL, MMA’s only league format that consists of knockout and qualification rounds.
MacDonald reached this year's semi-final and was just one win away of challenging for the title and $1million prize.
Instead, his defeat to American Taylor (25), was a defeat that ended a long and distinguished career.
