Tom Aspinall, the interim UFC heavyweight champion, has reversed his stance on stripping Jon Jones of the undisputed title. Initially, Aspinall called for Jones to be relieved of the crown due to his injury hiatus, but after further consideration, he believes Jones deserves to keep the belt.
Acknowledging Jones' Contributions
Despite his change in opinion, Aspinall still respects Jones' contributions to the sport. He acknowledges that Jones has done a lot for MMA and suggests that he should consider vacating the title to allow the division to move forward.
Awaiting Jones' Return
Jones is currently recovering from a torn pec and is expected to be out until at least July. The UFC plans to have him face former heavyweight champ Stipe Miocic when he returns. Aspinall believes that if Jones decides to stick around for their potential fight, Father Time may be on his side due to Jones' age and wear and tear on his body.
Patience and Improvement
While waiting for Jones and Miocic to handle their business, Aspinall may have to defend his interim crown or sit on the sidelines. However, he sees this as an opportunity to continue improving as an athlete and believes that he is maturing both physically and mentally. Aspinall takes his training seriously and spends a significant amount of time in the gym.
