Controversial Promotion
UFC boss Dana White has announced that his new Power Slap league is already valued at a staggering $450 million. The league, which debuted on TV screens in January, features competitors slapping each other as hard as they can. While the concept has divided opinion among sports fans, concerns over the safety of the participants have sparked a significant backlash.
Profit and Backlash
Despite the controversy, Dana White seems to be profiting greatly from the Power Slap league. Speaking on the Rock Sugar Magic podcast, White called it a "juggernaut" and claimed that it surpassed the social media numbers of popular sports leagues such as NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL, UFC, WWE, NASCAR, Formula 1, PGA, and more. He also revealed that he has garnered a substantial number of sponsors in just nine months.
Contradicting Figures
However, White's claim contradicts widely reported social media numbers and TV viewership figures. Power Slap has only put on five events in 2023 and remains a niche promotion. The safety concerns surrounding the league have also raised questions about the validity of White's claims.
Addressing Safety Concerns
Responding to safety concerns, White defended the league by stating that they ensure the fighters are healthy before each event. He compared the number of slaps in Power Slap to the number of punches in boxing matches, suggesting that the criticism is based on misinformation or pure dislike.
