Rener Gracie's black belt, however, failed to make it to the second crack at 145lb Gold. He was defeated unanimously.

After absorbing an incredible 210 significant strikes and leaving him with a broken orbital bone, Ortega was left in a terrible state.

The Nevada State Athletic Commission banned him from competing for 180-days.

However, the 30-year-old could be back in action sooner if he is medically cleared by his doctor.

Ortega, a UFC fan favorite, was also suspended for six months. Ortega was also banned for 60 days with no contact allowed for 45 days.

Ortega posted the full extent his injuries to Instagram: "Fractured orbital, some bruisedribs."

"Once my orbital heals, then I'll be ready for chuck'em all over again!" I meant what I said. I love you guys!"

Ortega stated in his post-fight interview that "No matter what, we're always here to put on a show for you guys."

"It's time to climb up this ladder and improve. You can see it, man. I'm evolving, evolving.

Even if we fail, it doesn't define us. How we overcome it is what matters.

"And that's Mexico for you."

Ortega was praised by Volkanovski during the post-fight press conference. He said: "I thought that he was broken after round three."

"The ref gave him a moment to ask questions because he wasn’t answering them correctly.

"I told him because I was looking at him -- and he was saying, 'Look this direction,' but he was actually looking the other way.

Ortega, a man in a trance, has made a vow to bounce back from the crushing defeat

"He answered all questions incorrectly and they waited until they had the right answer. Then, they said, 'Let’s get into it.

"I was like, "What's the matter?" They gave him another minute. I looked at his eyes and he couldn't see. That was it. It's done.

"Then, I go back in there and put pressure on him, and he fires back like nothing ever happened." He's tough and he's strong. It's a credit to him.
