ALEXANDER VOLKANOVSKI won his UFC featherweight title at UFC 266, in a thrilling five-round fight with Brian Ortega.
After five thrilling rounds with Ortega in the Octagon, the Australian was victorious, taking home points and a unanimous decision.
Volkanovski defeated Brian Ortega, the American's second loss in his last three fights.
Ortega vs Volkanovski was the Fight of the Night in UFC 266. Ortega won the second round, but Ortega took control.
American (30-year-old) managed to knock Volkanovski out in the third round. He attempted to follow it up with a mounted choke and then a triangle choke.
Volkanovski, who is No4 in UFC's men's pound-for-pound rankings, was able to escape both submissions and then pinned Ortega with a series ground strikes.
This led to a long inspection by the doctor who determined Ortega fit to continue. Volkanovski was then locked in a second choke hold in round 4.
However, Ortega was again beaten by the champ with yet another round of ground strikes.
With scores of 49-46, 50-45, 50-44, the fight reached the judges' scorecards. Volkanovski emerged as the clear winner.
The Australian declared, after the fight: "I am a normal human being." It's a statement I have repeated over and over. It took hard work to get me where I am today.
"All those doubters, I'm going keep proving you wrong every time." Bring it!
Volkanovski now has 20 consecutive wins. The last ten of his victories came in the UFC, which Volkanovski started in 2016.
After beating Max Holloway, the Australian won Upset of the year at the World MMA Awards. He was then awarded the UFC Featherweight Championship.
In July 2019, he won the controversial rematch against Holloway, which he then retained by split decision.
