Watch as politicians fight it out in a brutal MMA fight in order to settle a dispute about conservation in the Amazonian region

A brutal MMA fight ended the political dispute between a Brazilian mayor and a former councillor.

Simao Peixoto (the mayor of Borba, in the Amazonas region) and Erineu Alvas Da Silva were at odds for several months over Balneario Lima, a city water park.

They decided to end their dispute by putting on gloves and participating in a mixed-martial arts fight at the 12th Leonardo Almeida MMMA Cup.

The bout was agreed upon and streamed live on social media in front of a large crowd.

Peixoto, 39 years old, entered the cage wearing a towel with the words "Jesus" written across it.

The contest was not spectacular as both men displayed a lack in technique.

Silva, 45, was looking to use leg kicks and was the aggressor right from the beginning. This was until Peixoto hit a hard jab and knocked Silva down.

The mayor charged, piling him to the ground and raining down many strikes.

Silva was able to reverse the situation and punish his opponent with his own ground strikes.

Both men had their gas tanks emptied in a fiery first round. This led to the two remaining stanzas being sloppy, rigid affairs.

Silva won the most exchanges, and the crowd was expecting him to raise his hand after the final round.

To their delight, however, Judges awarded Mayor Peixoto victory.

Local media were shocked by the outcome, with Fato Amazonico reporting that "the mayor took such beatings, his jaw dropped."

After the verdict was announced, angry spectators shouted "Stitch up!"

After the announcement of the outcome, both men hugged.

Peixoto posted a reflection on the fight via Instagram. He wrote: "Last Saturday (11th), Borba municipality, state of Amazonas held the 12th Edition of the Leonardo Almeida MMA Cup to collect food for families living in social vulnerability. This is the beginning of the Christmas Solidarity celebrations.

"In all, there were 14 fights with the participation athletes from Manaus, Nova Olinda do Norte and Novo Aripuana.

"The most anticipated fight by the public was Mayor Simao Peixoto against Erineu Alves. Both agreed to take part in the event solely for the purpose of collecting food for the Christmas Solidarity.

"The main event won was for Mayor Simao Peixoto. He managed to encourage the practice and, through food donations, instilled a sense of solidarity among the residents.

"It's worth noting that Amazonas is the World Champion Factory, home to renowned MMA fighters.

"The Federation Amazonense Nak Su de Muay Thay approved the event and sent their referees to help it realize.

"To be allowed into the gym, the public must show the vaccination schedule and wear a mask. This is a requirement by the event's organizer."
