British fighter Tom Aspinall is preparing for his shot at UFC gold, and he's weighing in at his career heaviest for the fight. Aspinall, from Wigan, will be competing in the co-main event of UFC 295 at Madison Square Garden in New York City, where he will be vying for the interim heavyweight title. This opportunity arose due to an injury to the current undisputed champion, Jon Jones. Aspinall's opponent, Sergei Pavlovich, also made weight, setting the stage for what promises to be an exciting showdown.
Short Notice, Big Opportunity
Aspinall has had less than two weeks to prepare for this momentous fight. In fact, he was just a day away from going on a vacation with his friends when he received the call. The British fighter recounted the moment he got the life-changing news, saying, "I got the call early in the morning, so I was sleeping... And it was off someone really high up in the UFC, not Dana White but someone really high up, who's never called me before." Aspinall almost ignored the call but decided to pick up and was informed about the opportunity. He recalled, "Jon Jones is injured, Stipe doesn't want to fight anybody else bar Jon Jones so you and Big Pavers on MSG.' and I said, 'I'm in.'"
Weigh-In Success
Both Aspinall and Pavlovich successfully made weight at the early weigh-ins. Aspinall tipped the scales at a career-high 261.6lbs, while Pavlovich came in at 259.8lbs. The fighters now look forward to stepping into the octagon and giving it their all for the interim heavyweight title.
This is a major moment for Tom Aspinall, who could become just the third British fighter to hold a title in the UFC. Fans are eagerly anticipating the fight and are excited to see if Aspinall can make history in the sport. Make sure to tune in to UFC 295 to witness this highly-anticipated showdown!
