Canelo, a 31-year-old, signed to fight Golovkin (40), on September 17, as part of a deal with Eddie Hearn.

The Mexican was the favourite to win the first contract bout against Dmitry Bivol, a WBA light-heavyweight.

31-year-old Bivol boxed his way to Las Vegas victory as Canelo saw the cloak of invincibility he had worn disappear overnight.

He was also made to drop out of the conversation, becoming a pound-for-pound king.

Canelo, the four-division champ, retorted and said he was still the best in business and should not have to be punished for being courageous.

He said: "I do it. When I don't have to, I will take on everything in order to make history. I have already accomplished so many things.
