Claressa Shields says 'egos' keep boxers from following Claressa to MMA and putting up their reputations

CLARESSA SHIELDS admitted that boxers are not following her to MMA and putting up their reputations because of their egos.

Shields, who is 26 years old, is one of the most decorated fighters of all time and claims to be the "Greatest Woman of All Time".

Her case is strong too. She holds two Olympic gold medals, three belts in each division, and was the first undisputed boxing champion at 2 weight.

To further her legacy, Shields debuted last year in MMA with The Professional Fighters League.

She is the only boxing champ to fight in both combat codes. However, she doesn't expect many others to follow her example.

SunSport spoke with Shields: "Ego, men can have a lot egos, and a lot boxers have them."

They want to excel at what they are great at, and they won't do anything if they have to deal with anything unusual or uncomfortable.

"I don’t believe we will ever see a boxer become a world champ in boxing, then try to be a world champion at MMA. That's PFL, the UFC or something.

"I don’t believe it will happen, and if it does it would be Terence Crawford who has a wrestling background and is a great boxer.

Shields won her MMA debut against Brittney Elkin in June. She beat Brittney in the final round.

The American suffered defeat in October for the second time in her adult life. She lost on points to Abigail Montes.

Shields' last defeat was against Savannah Marshall, an amateur boxer from Britain in 2012 at the world championships.

She is set to take revenge on Marshall, 30, in a super-fight later this year.

She will be returning to MMA in 2023. PFL's $1million winner-take-all season, which consists of a quarters-, semis- and final format, is her target.

Holly Holm, 40, is Only Shields' MMA partner. She has won both world and national honours in boxing and MMA.

She will be able to repeat her success in boxing, which is an unprecedented feat.

Shields stated: "Overall, in terms of combat sport, I should be in the top two.

"It's unimaginable, it's never before been done and that's the thing people want to see, extraordinary items.

"And the fact I'm willing put my reputation, and my record on the line in order to win the PFL World title, it speaks volumes about my character.

It shows the grit fighters claim they have. But you can't just state you have grit. You have to prove it.
