Introduction of Super-Cruiserweight Division Closes Gap Between Cruiser and Heavyweight
The world of boxing is about to witness a major shake-up as plans to introduce a new weight class have been ratified. Following the World Boxing Council's introduction of the bridgerweight division in 2020, the World Boxing Association (WBA) has announced the creation of a super-cruiserweight division. This new weight class, which will have a minimum weight of 200lbs and a maximum of 224lbs, aims to bridge the gap between the cruiser and heavyweight divisions.
WBA Follows WBC's Lead
The WBA's decision to introduce the super-cruiserweight division comes after the success of the bridgerweight division introduced by the WBC. The WBA's Executive Committee, in a vote called by president Gilberto Jesus Mendoza, approved the creation of this new weight class. The super-cruiserweight division will provide a much-needed middle ground for boxers weighing between 200 and 224 pounds, offering them more opportunities to compete at a competitive level.
Addressing the Growth and Gap
Both the WBC and WBA have recognized the natural growth of combatants over the years and the significant jump between the cruiser and heavyweight divisions. The WBC's chief, Mauricio Sulaiman, explained that the introduction of the bridgerweight division was necessary due to the impressive growth in the weight of athletes. Similarly, the WBA's decision to create the super-cruiserweight division aims to address the same issue and provide a more balanced and competitive landscape for fighters in this weight range.
Perfect Fit for Deontay Wilder
Former WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder could find himself tempted by the new super-cruiserweight division. Wilder has weighed inside the 224lbs weight limit in the majority of his recent fights, making him a perfect fit for this weight class. In fact, he was within the super-cruiserweight limit when he delivered a knockout blow to Robert Helenius in his last fight. This new division could offer Wilder a fresh start and exciting new opportunities in his boxing career.
