Boxing's cut-eye curse strikes again
Boxing has seen its fair share of unexpected twists and turns throughout history. One such story is the infamous Rumble in the Jungle, where Muhammad Ali and George Foreman were unexpectedly blocked from leaving Zaire. While Tyson Fury may have suffered an eyebrow injury before his fight with Aleksandr Usyk, it's nothing compared to the bizarre circumstances Ali and Foreman found themselves in 50 years ago.
Ali and Foreman's house arrest
In 1974, Ali and Foreman were set to face off in Kinshasa, Zaire. However, just eight days before the fight, Foreman suffered a cut during training that required 11 stitches. This led to the postponement of the highly anticipated match. Ali, known for his quick thinking, tried to persuade Promoter Don King to move the fight to America, but without Zaire's financial backing, it was a non-starter. As a result, both Ali and Foreman were effectively put under house arrest, unable to leave the country until the fight could take place.
President Mobutu's iron grip
Behind the scenes, Zaire's dictator, President Mobutu, held all the power. He was paying each fighter a staggering $5 million, an astronomical sum for the time. Mobutu was not one to be trifled with, known for executing dissidents who opposed his regime. He feared that if Ali or Foreman left Zaire, they would never return. To protect his investment, he issued a decree that the fighters should not be allowed to leave under any circumstances.
Imprisoned in Zaire
Not only were Ali and Foreman unable to leave Zaire, but the foreign media also faced the same fate. Journalists and photographers, including our very own reporter, were informed that they were not permitted to leave the country until after the fight. Being imprisoned in downtown Kinshasa for over a month was far from glamorous. It took four days of negotiations before the authorities finally relented and allowed the media to depart.

The aftermath
The 36-day lay-off had a significant impact on Foreman, both physically and psychologically. While Ali continued to train and spar, Foreman brooded and waited for his cut to heal. In the end, Ali emerged victorious, defeating Foreman in the eighth round. Now, with Fury facing a similar delay in his fight with Usyk, it remains to be seen how the prolonged preparation period will affect his performance.
It's a reminder that in the world of boxing, anything can happen, and fighters must be prepared for the unexpected twists and turns that come their way.
