GILBERT BURNS believes a title shot for Khamzat Chimaev or himself will be possible if they make a big statement at their welterweight fight.
The Brazilian was given the task of welcoming the undefeated phenom into the upper ranks of the 170lbs division at UFC 273 in Jacksonville. Florida.

Chimaev is on a tear ever since he was promoted to mixed martial arts' top promotion, but he has not broken a sweat during his four victories in the octagon.
Burns also believes that the welterweight title, which Kamaru Usman will defend in summer against Brit Leon Edwards, will be within reach for either man if they win in dominating fashion at the VyStar Veteran Memorial Arena.

"He might win the fight right there. Another thing I believe to be true, going into the fight, is the performance.
It all depends on how well you perform. If there is a finish, it will be me or Chimaev. With a finish I believe a title fight [is] next].
"With a normal victory, a regular loss, no. It'll be one more fight, I believe.
Burns, 35, believes that the divisive Colby Covington might be able to fight Usman again if he and Chimaev lose in an impressive manner.

"I believe if one of [us] goes out there and shocks everyone, then yeah, that's a title shot.
"If it's not, or if it's split decision, or a very difficult fight for both of them, for sure, another fight [to win a title shot].
Burns is focusing on the things he can control in the octagon, but admits that Edwards' dethronement and delay of his plans to fight for his belt again are also thoughts.
He said, "It's all about the performance." That's why I am focusing on it right now.
"I have to go out there and finish my job and do my best. We'll see what happens next.
"Because I think the best scenario is [I] go to there and get a 2nd-round finish, and if Leon Edwards beats Kamaru boom, rematch.
"I don't want to wait six or eight more months, I'm going to get the next guy in line.
"That's why it's beyond my control, it's not under my control.
"What I can control are my training and my performance. I want to go out and do my best.
