Diaz, 37 is a big underdog heading into his September showdown against Chimaev. But Paul is optimistic that the fan favourite will overcome all odds and defeat the welterweight phenom.

He tweeted: "Betr believe, I'm placing my money on Nate Diaz winning against fake Khabib."

Paul's bold prediction was quickly remarked upon by MMA fans, one of them saying that Khabib is not Khabib.

"It seems a little strange that you would make that comparison."

Since his UFC 263 loss to Brit Leon Edwards in June, Diaz hasn’t been inside the Octagon.

Although the former lightweight title challenger wanted to make a quick turnaround to finish his UFC contract, he was unable.

Diaz declined the promotion's earlier offers to clash with Chimaev, but he changed his mind in an effort to become a free agent.

During an appearance on The MMA Hour he stated: "I have been asking for fights ever since whenever. I've asked for a lot."

"I asked for Vicente Luque, Tony Ferguson. I asked for four to five people. It wasn't good for them.

"They finally offered me Khamzat [Chimaev]", I said a little, "What the f ***?', but then thought, why not? Let's do it.

"I requested the Khamzat battle. All kinds of excuses began to appear. I wanted January, March, and all of these things...

"I want to get this show on its feet, but they are keeping me in my contract and holding me hostage. That's what my main goal is.
