Jeff Monson, the former UFC fighter known as 'The Snowman', has made quite the career transition. Originally from the United States, Monson has renounced his American citizenship and become a Russian politician. But how did he get here?

Early UFC Career

Monson's journey began 23 years ago when he made his octagon debut at UFC 27, defeating Tim Lajcik via unanimous decision. He went on to have two stints in the Ultimate Fighting Championship, but his career took a turn after losses to MMA icons Chuck Liddell and Ricco Rodriguez.

The Journeyman Stage

Following his departure from the UFC in 2006, Monson entered the journeyman stage of his career. He competed in multiple organizations around the world, but it was in Russia where he found ample opportunities to showcase his skills. In fact, a staggering 22 of his 89 career fights have taken place in Russia.

Affinity for Russia

Monson's affinity for "the Russian people" grew over the years, and in 2018, his wish came true when Russian President Vladimir Putin granted him citizenship. Feeling at peace with himself and his surroundings, Monson made the decision to renounce his American homeland.

From Fighter to Politician

Monson's love for Russia led him to a surprising move into politics. He was recently elected to the regional parliament of Russia's Republic of Bashkortostan. His connection to the region started in 2021 when he opened a grappling school in the regional capital of Ufa.

Renouncing American Citizenship

In February, Monson took the final step in severing ties with his American identity by handing over his US passport at the Istanbul consulate. Citing his disagreement with American politics, he declared, "Now I am no longer an American. I am only a Russian."

A Pro-Kremlin Voice

Monson's public criticism of American foreign policy played a significant role in him being granted Russian citizenship. His views caught the attention of state-owned media outlet Russia Today, which gave him his own TV show. Monson continues to openly criticizes America and its foreign policies.

Spreading Pro-Kremlin Propaganda

Monson's anti-American sentiment has intensified following Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. He accuses his homeland of wanting the conflict to continue for financial gain and alleges censorship of the truth. Monson claims that Americans are unaware of what is truly happening in the world due to media manipulation.
