UFC rookie Ian Garry isn't looking for a similar push to Khamzatchimaev, but is confident that he can combine it with the elite of the WW division

IAN GARRY is not in a hurry to mix it with the elite of welterweight. But that doesn't mean he doesn't have confidence in his abilities.

After back-to-back victories over Jordan Williams, Darian Weeks and Darian Weeks, the rising Irishman is now 2-0 in mixed martial arts' top promotion.

The UFC 268 debut of the former Cage Warriors welterweight champion was spectacular.

He lasted the full 15 minutes against Darian Weeks in his second match earlier this month

Garry already showed much of what European fighters saw in him during his Cage Warriors days.

However, being rushed like Khamzat Chimaev (a fellow divisional prospect) - or other talents from the past is not on The Future's agenda.

SunSport spoke with him: "The reason I keep going at a steady speed is to be a better me every time."

Give yourself more time between camps and more time to learn. Just have a better skill set every time I step into the octagon.

"If I were to rush myself, that would be a mistake."

Garry's steady and slow approach stems also from his refusal to believe in the hype surrounding his ever-improving skills.

He said, "It's easy to fall into that [mindset] of, 'Oh! I'm incredible.

"I can get there. "Dude, I train in one of the most elite gyms on the planet with the best men.

"I train with Gilbert Burns every morning, I've sat down and done MMA rounds alongside Vicente Luque Logan Storely, Jason Jackson.

"I have been through that gym's fire. I know my level - which is great because it's easy to see when I'm in the gym.

"And it's almost like, 'S**t! I'm that good. Imagine if I had another two years to go, when I'm 7-1, 8-1 and 9-0 in UFC. 18-0 in general. That's my mindset.

Garry is certain that he will improve to the point where it is possible to run through anyone who is in front of him.

He stated that he would own the division when he was ready to flip the switch and run for a world championship. It will be mine for a long time, until I get bored of it.

"So, the longer I take to build my skill-set until I feel like I'm capable of doing anything I want at any point, the more I want to be able to beat people at their best.

"If I'm up against a wrestler I want to be able out-wrestle his opponent. If I'm up against a world-class grappler I want to be able out-grapple his.

"If I'm in a team with a top-striker, I want to be able out-strike him. It takes time to reach that point.

Garry isn't in a hurry to mix it with the elite welterweight division, but he is confident he will be able to do so.

"I'm close to it, but I want better, and I want better, so that everyone is more f d when i get there."

Garry was able to finish the game with Weeks, unlike his first match against Williams.

The Dubliner, who put in an excellent performance against the American, believes that hearing the last horn will make him a better person in the end.

He stated, "It is clearly going to be beneficial to experience that experience, have these rounds.

"I won that fight very easily, and there's so much I can still take from it to change my game and be a better me next time.

"Would that have been possible if there was a finish?" But then, I would have had two knockouts or two finishes in the UFC.

"I don't think it's a problem in any way. Both outcomes can be viewed as positives. It would have been incredible to get a knockout in the ring.

"It's a great experience to go in and get the 15 minutes. Both are positive. Both of them were positives. I was the winner at the end. That's the main thing.

Even though he was criticized for his behavior against Weeks Garry believes that going the distance will benefit him in the long-term.

Although some fans of fights were not happy with his performance, 9-0 Garry sees only positives in his second octagon appearance.

He stated, "It's a great experience for me and you can never complain having a 15-minute fight. And coming out unscathed."

It was dominance. I had a lot of fun. It was more calculated than my last fight.

"I believe he parked his bus a little too far so I had to be aggressive to get him to stop and for me to continue to fight back.

"So I had to think about it a lot more. I would have loved to be able to get into the flow sooner.

"It took me ten mins to get into the flow, because he was being a little stagnant and wasn’t doing anything.
